1. Does my Kysor-Medallion (TM) Speedometer require a modification for the GPS upgrade? NO. The NL2 was specifically designed
to mate to a stock speedometer. Should your boat’s instrument cluster have two speedometers, the NL2 will only work
with those It’s directly attached to. See the Dual Speedometer Option below.
2. How are the NL2 and GPS Receiver Powered? Both are powered through your boat’s MDC/MMDC computer. The computer provides
7 Volts DC to each gauge. The NL2 taps into the 7 VDC to power itself and the Receiver. Tests have verified the computer’s ability to
supply more than three-times the combined (nominal) NL2/Receiver/Speedometer power. DO NOT PLUG THE NL2 DIRECTLY
INTO 12 VOLTS DC.
3. What’s the difference between a One Hertz and Five Hertz GPS Receiver? The difference is the update rate; or how frequent
the GPS receiver collects and then sends current position and velocity data. The One Hertz receivers do it once every second. The
Five Hertz Receivers grab and send data five times per second... Or on average, every 200 milliseconds.
4. Why is a calibration necessary? Experiments have shown that two same model speedometers (like Toyota to Toyota) have very
similar calibration curves. The nautic Laugic factory default, model-specific, calibrations are derived from these trends. And the GPS
speed values conveyed using the defaults are close to true. For Best Results however, each NL2 / Speedometer pair should be
calibrated to account for the gauges’s unique electro-mechanical response. The successful calibration is stored in non-volatile
memory, and further calibrations are not required.
5. Will the NL2 affect the performance of my other gauges? No. However, attaching the NL2 to a speedometer that has a small
LCD (display) in the speedometer’s face, will loose the LCD functionality. THIS LCD IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE HOUR METER
LCD FOUND ON THE TACH. THE HOUR METER WILL CONTINUE TO WORK AS IT DID PRIOR TO INTRODUCING THE NL2.
6. Why must I purchase the Garmin 18X-5Hz through nautic Laugic? Garmin’s stock connector is not compatible with the NL2.
7. Can I drive my Dual speedometers from a single NL2? Yes, if you purchase the Twin Speedo’s option. By purchasing this
Option, the NL2 is outfitted with a second set of connections to govern a second speedometer.
Limitations: The NL2 stores only one calibration, thus both speedometers are assumed to be identical twins. The NL2’s visual cues
provided through the gauges backlighting, are only observed on the Primary Speedometer; the second speedometer’s backlight
remains functionality unchanged.
8. Why does the Swift Package cost less then the Garmin Package... Yet its GPS is twice as fast? its because
Garmin is very, very proud of their GPS 18X-5Hz receivers (and charge us more for them)!
9. Can I purchase a NL2 and NL4, feeding both from one GPS Receiver Yes. Please inquire by email for details.
